< PreviousWhole organizations can be built around a lie and, by the time the lie is exposed by truth, lots of good people are hurt. Just look at any cult.So what were the principles by which many of those at the top of Enron actually lived? It was simple; make money. Make a lot, make it quickly, and keep making more. Now there is nothing wrong with making money. Money creates opportunities and empowers others. But if money is the principle that trumps all others, the result is something that looks like Enron. Enron’s principles drove the executives to work long hours. Driven by their principles the executives at Enron gave their all. Enormous amounts of energy, time, and creativity were spent to create a deception so they could continue to make money. Enron was a principle-based organization. It’s just that the principle served self over others. What are your principles? I don’t mean those you craft at a board meeting or the ones someone writes on a plaque. I’m asking you to look inside and to be honest. Really honest. We all have principles by which we live, and those principles drive our behavior. They make decisions for us and come out of us over time. And one of the worst states you can be in is to be driven by a set of principles you refuse to acknowledge exists. Here’s a few examples. You tell others, “I have your back.” But your principle of personal success means when it’s between you and them, they lose. You invite people to, “Just be honest with me.” But when someone questions you, your “I need to be important” principle means they pay a steep price for that honesty. How do you know if your spoken principles and your real principles are the same? There are a couple of ways to figure this out. One is by questioning yourself. Take a look over your years of living and ask yourself a few questions. What really drives my decisions? What is it that upsets me when something doesn’t work? What is most important to me? If you say your principle is “family first” then the answer should look like very few late nights at work, being upset at others for interfering with your family time, and a family who says to you, “Thank you for being there.” If those aren’t reality, then your family principle is being trumped by another one.The other way of figuring out your true principles is to ask others. Write down what you think your principles are, and then without discussing those with anyone else, ask, “What do you think my principles are?” If the two lists line up, great. If not, you have some reality to start facing. Truth is powerful because in the end truth always makes you freer than a lie.The truth is: you shall follow your principles. But that statement is not a command, it’s a fact.Featured Columns - LeadershipAndrew Trawick has more than 25 years of international business leadership and development experience in over 30 countries. It offers standard modules for tribal programs including Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), General Assistance, 477 Reporting, Child Protective Services, Indian Child Welfare, Foster Care, Tribal Court, Enrollment, and Treatment Services. The solution can be custom-ized based on specific needs while multiple modules can be added creating a truly integrated solution. Because RiteTrack is an internet client, the tribe’s IT department can eliminate last-generation, client-server systems used by tribal programs. Handel provides unrivaled service from implementation through support to accompany its exceptional software solutions. Value to Native American MarketInformation about social services provided by a tribe is often located in multiple disconnected “data silos.” These silos can include legacy software systems, spreadsheets, and/or paper files that do not share common data and cannot communicate with each other. Additionally, reporting on the extent and effectiveness of services a tribe provides is incredibly difficult because of the data coming from multiple sources. An integrated solution pro-motes appropriate information sharing between departments and minimizes IT support needed for programs. A RiteTrack integrated solution is the most powerful option; however, the individual, standard modules feature advantages over other offerings. For example, the Enrollment module offers web-based accessibility (plus configuration options), an automat-ically-generated family tree, and multiple ID card printing options. While the Enrollment functionality is designed for tribal members, RiteTrack tracks non-members, too, making the Enrollment module the perfect foundation for tracking services that are provided to non-members and members. The General Assistance module, which is the foundation of the TANF module, tracks budget and grant accounts, services funded by these accounts, services provided to members/clients, and reporting on all financial activity. RiteTrack easily integrates with accounting systems. The TANF module tracks all financial assistance provided including TANF non-cash assistance. The federal TANF reporting functionality provides checks for error checks, produces needed reports and identifies needed corrections with a clickable link to simplify the quarterly reporting process. RiteTrack generates re-ports in the user interface thus eliminating the need to use another software program or IT resources to produce reports. The Child Protective Services/Indian Child Welfare module generates statistics required for federal reporting including the BIA Quarterly/Annual ICW Report and AFCARS. The Treatment Services module contains progress notes and treatment planning applicable in mental health and substance abuse programs.Who We AreHandel Information Technologies, based in Laramie, Wyoming, established in 1997, is now recognized as a leader in helping Tribes utilize technology to provide better services. RiteTrack has been implemented for over 20 tribes and dozens of programs. Tribes using an integrated RiteTrack system include Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Indians, Northwest Intertribal Court System, Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians, and the Mohegan Tribe; all use multiple modules in custom-integrated RiteTrack systems.CompanyHandel Information Technologies, Inc.Sales ContactEven Brande Casey BaderPresident & CEO Vice Presidenteven@handelit.com casey@handelit.com 307-742-5555 • www.handelit.comAdministrator interface displaying modules in an integrated solution11Fall 2015TribalNet and Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians Partner Up in the Development of a NEW Conference AppThe new app in 2015 will provide exciting opportunities for TribalNet participants to engage!12TribalNetThe Annual TribalNet Conference is THE premier event and platform in the industry for connecting tribal organizations, health centers, casinos, and businesses together with solution, product, and service providers in the technology industry. The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians has a single IT department made up of 42 team members that are dedicated to certain areas of the tribe yet focused as one unit to oversee the entire tribe, its service organizations, and enterprises. Lewis, Washington, I had a friend whose family happened to own a very interesting business. You see, Chris came from a long line of morticians and undertakers, and that was, in fact, his job in the Army. Chris drove around in a souped up black hearse with a bumper sticker that read, “put the fun back in funeral!” I always got a kick out of this and learned a very important life lesson the day I asked him about the sticker. “Our family business differentiates itself by celebrating life,” he said. “Our funeral home is less dedicated to the act of mourning than it is to bringing families together to celebrate one’s life and legacy. From the way we arrange the rooms to promote communication, the colors, the lighting; everything is designed around bringing families together.” And he was right. He went on to explain some of the wakes and services his family performed, and they actually sounded fun. This was perhaps my first lesson in gamification. You see, a lot things in life are a matter of perception. By using the words “celebration of life,” the perception of the service changed and people were more likely to be happier and remember all the good things about that person’s life.Gamification is all around us and always has been. Whether it is your Starbucks coffee card or your Alaska Airlines mileage plan, elements of this gamified world saturate our daily lives. First, what is gamification? Well, according to Gabe Zichermann, game designer, author, and industry leader, gamification is “the process of game-thinking and game mechanics to engage users and solve problems.” Did you see that key word “engage?” And how about the phrase “solve problems?” You see, every day people do incredible things that they do not get paid for; actually, people pay thousands of dollars to solve unnecessary challenges like running the Boston marathon or climbing Mt. Everest. Why? What is driving this? Perhaps it is just perception. Let’s say you are a manager, and your goal is to get people to jump into an icy lake. Historically our approach to this has been “sticks and carrots.” I will pay you $100 to jump in that icy lake or I can hit you in the head with this here stick. Another way of looking at this is, “I will give you a raise if you perform this task well or I will fire you.”But, what if we applied game mechanics to this action. Perhaps a better way is a different approach all together. “Welcome to the first annual Polar Bear Plunge for a cancer cure!” Participants would not only line up to donate money for this cause, but they would get five of their friends to sign up with them, they would take group selfies and post them to Instagram and Facebook. There would be a ton of engaged users advertising your cause. They would even buy a souvenir T-shirt on the way out. Our job in game design is to create this environment that has:• simple, recognizable cues for action• clear feedback on the actions that people take• a marker for success• and accessible paths for achievementBy focusing on the user and user’s experience, we arrive at a better conclusion. This is what games do so well. They engage us, they are focused on how we experience the game. How do they do this? First and foremost they do something that we in health care fail to do over and over again, they provide us feedback. Yes you heard me, proper feedback. You don’t drive a car until it is out of gas. We have gas gauges that tell us when we are running low. Or imagine watching Incorporating Fun Into Measurable Results14TribalNetJames SpillaneInformatics and Applications PM Sitnasuak Health Solutions“Let us measure for improvement, for excitement! There is a saying in game design, if it can be measured, it can be gamified. So I ask you, what actions do you want people to take?”Featured Columns - Social Engagementa basketball game in which there were no score or clock; the game just simply ended and the announcer stated that they would be sending the results via email in the next couple of weeks. Yet in health care, a place where we have tons of metrics and measurements, we fail to dynamically share them with the people who matter most, our staff and our patients. In fact, we lock them in rooms and make people sign pieces of paper to see them. And if we do happen to share them, it is only for the purpose of accountability (punishment). This is absurd. Let us measure for improvement, for excitement! There is a saying in game design, if it can be measured, it can be gamified. So I ask you, what actions do you want people to take? Write them down on a piece of paper; whatever it is — to visit the buffet, become a member of your loyalty program, increase cervical cancer screening or even Facebook likes. You are now going to do three things. 1. Design a game around it2. Measure it3. Share itThat third one might just be the most important. By simply becoming aware of the measurement, the actual measurement begins to improve and there is no turning back. When working with clients, our first question is often, “what is your measure of success?” A lot of times we are looking for the answer behind the answer. Let’s say it is to improve population health. We then ask, “how are you measuring this?” Mostly there will be some sort of metrics bundle focused on diabetes, cancer screenings, A1C in control, etc. We then ask them how they are sharing these measures. Think about that. Most of us know how much money we have in our bank account, yet have no idea what our A1C is or if our blood pressure is in control. At an organizational level, we are even worse. You see, we measure the things we care about. If we don’t measure, we don’t care. It is the next action that is most important, we have to share these measures with the people who can actually change them for the better! Casinos need to utilize various communication methods to attract clien-tele. Not everyone or every generation is receptive to the same approach, so it can be a real challenge to appeal to the masses.Technology has certainly added new dimensions to the way casinos communicate with customers. The use of technology sometimes makes casino marketing and prospecting for new customers resemble online dating. Like people, casinos can generate an initial attraction based on their online presence, which depicts their physical attributes or perceived alluring persona; but great looks and charm will most likely not be enough to foster or sustain a long–lasting relationship. Relationships need to be cultivated with substantive and interesting engagement, otherwise they can become stale and possibly lead to a desire to look elsewhere or completely fizzle out. If a relationship is genuine it encompasses loyalty and frequent displays of appreciation. Okay, I’m done with the relationship banter, but I just wanted to allude to the similarity of online dating and tactical casino marketing. Here’s another per-spective, casinos are constantly trying to solicit new customers and retain old ones with various offers and propositions. Maybe proposition is a bad choice of word; it makes it sound as if I’m talking about some type of nefarious escort activity. Anyway, here’s the point I’m trying to make, when Mitt Romney was running for president and he said, “corporations are people”. That’s kind of how casinos can be perceived by potential customers, especially when there is a considerable use of social media technology, such as Facebook, Twitter, IM, Instagram, text alerts, etc. All of these vehicles can provide a mechanism for individualized communication to existing customers on a regular basis in hopes of retaining their loyalty and possibly leading to a much more exclusive relationship. (Another relationship reference.)The various generations are not all “wired” the same and do not necessarily share the same passion for technology. For instance, baby boomers are typically a little slower or apprehensive to embrace the latest technology offerings, so they need to be engaged differently than the millennials or Generation X. The real technology adopters are obviously the millennials, and they seem to want nothing to do with the boring and ho-hum, passé methods of Casino Marketing - All Generations18TribalNetFran MooreVice PresidentInformation TechnologyCache Creek Casino Resort“The various generations are not all “wired” the same and do not necessarily share the same passion for technology.” Featured Columns - Casino Marketingcommunication.
