Good leadership and a strong culture are inseparable; both are essential to the treatment of every single person within an organization. Good leadership calls for us to find ways to improve the quality of life of the people we’re serving and to help them become better than they are, while a strong culture guides our actions and determines how people are treated. Human dignity is something that should absolutely be prioritized by anyone in a position of leadership, and culture is key to showing people how much they are valued, both for their contributions and for the humanity they bring to the workplace. When we talk about creating a culture of leadership, it’s important to be mindful of three key areas that will serve as the foundation of this culture: values, innovation and growth. Values are the cornerstone of every interaction among your people, innovation is the process of empowering your people to unleash their creativity to see things beyond how they are, and growth gives your people the opportunity to leverage their potential to achieve something greater. VALUESThere’s no escaping the fact that your values are your voice. The truths and beliefs that we hold within ourselves will undoubtedly determine how we interact with others, both inside and outside of work. When determining a values system for your organization, first ask, “What’s important to us?” and, “Who do we want to be?” Whatever outcomes you’re striving to achieve for your organization, strong relationships should always precede any such outcome. Just as important as establishing values is the need to hold people accountable for living by these values. Values such as respect and integrity should be non-negotiable; ethical business practices and the recognition of the strengths we all carry within us are predicated on staying true to these beliefs. INNOVATIONThere are always risks inherent in business and new ventures, but one of the riskiest things we can do is to settle for things as they are. Short-term success cannot be a replacement for long-term strategy, and this requires all of us to be able to see beyond immediate achievements. We need to give our people the flexibility to be curious about the way things are and we need to provide them with the motivation to leverage their expertise to discover new and exciting solutions. Simply taking a step back and asking, “What if?” and, “Why not?” can be the start of an incredible breakthrough. Along with this, putting ourselves in the position of the people we’re serving can lead to unexpected and positive outcomes. In recent years, we’ve seen a revolution within a number of industries; several companies that were once seen as business titans have been toppled by new entrants. These new companies did this by refusing to believe in old limitations of what was possible. They weren’t content in settling for the way things are. They were curious and fearless in challenging the status quo, and this is a combination that can shape our future for the better.GROWTHGood people come to work every single day with their own aspirations, strengths, and challenges. If someone is fortunate enough to be in a position where we can influence their lives, that’s both an incredible responsibility and an opportunity. Our people must have a voice within the workplace, and leadership must listen to what they have to say. Knowing and understanding their aspirations helps us identify ways to leverage their strengths and allows us to continually provide them with the resources and support they need. Overcoming challenges and barriers to success and escaping the confines of one’s comfort zone can often be the result of effective mentoring and coaching. The strength of any relationship is also built on our understanding of each other’s needs and how responsive we are to those needs. Good leadership also isn’t synonymous with always having the right answers — it is having the humility to accept we do not have the solution for every challenge our organization experiences and trusting our people to develop the right answer. The best leaders I’ve known have been humble enough to hire great people and then provide them with the flexibility to flourish. This kind of environment is absolutely essential to a culture of leadership and it’s beneficial for everyone involved. People should have the freedom to exercise their talent and the ongoing support from their leadership that enables them to find the way forward for their organization. The fundamental truth of any type of success an organization achieves is the fact that it was built upon the ingenuity and hard work of the people involved. Values, innovation, and growth are all essential to helping an organization deliver on the promise of what’s possible. Staying true to the core beliefs of decency, while also staying curious about the possibility of new breakthroughs and having the room to grow, can not only help your organization thrive but also change our world for the better. Leaders should be passionate about helping others also become leaders in every area of their life. And if leaders exist to help improve quality of life, imagine this effect on an incredibly large scale. That’s a breakthrough worth working towards.BYCHRISTOPHER OROZCO, MBADIRECTOR OF TEAM MEMBER RELATIONS, WIN-RIVER RESORT & CASINO Christopher is the Director of Team Member Relations at Win-River Resort & Casino. (USET)Fiscal year 2019 is shaping up to be a very exciting and busy year full of rural and tribal broadband funding opportunities. Earlier this year, the USDA released funding opportunity announcements for the Rural e-Connectivity Pilot Program and for the Community Connect Grant Program for fiscal year 2019. Both programs provide funding to cover the costs of constructing, improving or acquiring the facilities and equipment needed to provide broadband service in eligible rural areas. Below you’ll find further information on each program as well as links to additional resources.Last year, Congress established a new USDA broadband loan and grant pilot program, the Rural eConnectivity Pilot Program (hereinafter the ReConnect Program). For this purpose, Congress provided USDA with $1.15 billion and expanded our authority to provide additional loans and grants. One of the essential goals of the ReConnect Program is to expand broadband service to rural areas that lack sufficient broadband access, defined as 10 megabits per second (Mbps) downstream and 1 Mbps upstream. The first round of funding includes three separate categories to choose from: 100% loan, 50% loan/50% grant, or 100% grant. Applicants are limited to one application.APPLICATION DEADLINES ARE: May 31, 2019 for 100% grants | June 21, 2019 for 50/50 loan/grant combinations | July 12, 2019 for 100% loansTo be eligible for a 100% loan or a loan/grant combination, 90% of the households in the proposed service area must lack sufficient broadband access. To be eligible for a 100% grant, 100% of the households must lack sufficient broadband access. In each category, the proposed network must be capable of providing service to every premise at a minimum speed of 25 Mbps downstream and 3 Mbps upstream. The Community Connect Grant Program helps fund broadband deployment in rural communities where it is not yet economically viable for private-sector providers to deliver service. Eligible applicants include federally-recognized tribes, most state and local governments, and nonprofit and for-profit corporations. Rural areas that lack existing broadband speeds of at least 10 Mbps downstream and 1 Mbps upstream are eligible. Grant recipients are required to provide broadband service free of charge to critical community facilities within the service area for two years.AGENCY UPDATE | UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE (USDA) RURAL DEVELOPMENTIf your tribe is interested in learning more about these programs, please contact us to discuss your current infrastructure needs.RECONNECT LOAN AND GRANT PROGRAM https://www.usda.gov/reconnect COMMUNITY CONNECT GRANT PROGRAM Application deadline is April 15, 2019 https://www.rd.usda.gov/programs-services/community-connect-grants USDA E-CONNECTIVITY TOOLKIT https://www.rd.usda.gov/files/508_RDeConnectivityToolkit121918.pdf CONTACT INFORMATION RUS TELECOM STAFF DC HEADQUARTERS STAFF https://www.rd.usda.gov/files/UTP_ContactStaff4Feb.pdfCONTACT INFORMATION RUS TELECOM GENERAL FIELD REPRESENTATIVES (GFRS) https://www.rd.usda.gov/contact-us/telecom-gfrConquer Data ManageMent & reporting »Standard Modules »Customizable Platform »Proven SuccessRiteTrack is a web-based information management system offering standalone modules available for a single program—however, these individual modules can also be implemented across multiple programs to create an integrated database system.
