Alexandria, Va. — Tribal Colleges are central to workforce development in many of the nation’s most rural areas. Chartered by tribal nations or the federal government, Tribal Colleges provide accessible, culturally grounded education and training to American Indian, Alaska Native, rural, and non-Native students.
The American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) recently recognized the Trump Administration’s new $61 million federal investment into Tribal Colleges and Universities (Tribal Colleges) for Fiscal Year 2026.
Tribal Colleges operate on more than 90 campuses and sites across 16 states. They collectively serve more than 160,000 American Indian, Alaska Native, and rural residents each year through a variety of academic and community-centered programs.
As Tribal Colleges look to expand workforce opportunities for their students, this investment will help them continue that progress by expanding access to high-skilled training, strengthening Career and Technical Education opportunities, preparing for Workforce Pell-eligible programs, and responding to the evolving workforce needs of the communities they serve.
Over the past five years, nearly 3,000 students have graduated with certifications or degrees from Tribal Colleges. These graduates have gained employment in various in-demand career fields, including health, education, and construction.
“Tribal Colleges and Universities are a driving force in workforce development, preparing students for the jobs that Tribal Nations, rural communities, and employers across the country need to fill,” said Ahniwake Rose, President and CEO of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium. “Federal investment gives Tribal Colleges the capacity to connect students to high-demand careers and help communities build the skilled workforce they need from within. As workforce needs continue to grow, Tribal Colleges are an essential part of the answer. Sustained federal investment is critical to ensuring they can continue meeting this moment.”
Investments in Tribal Colleges yielded significant financial returns:
- Tribal College students receive $7.50 in increased lifetime earnings for every dollar invested in a Tribal College education, far outpacing stock market averages such as the S&P 500 over a 30-year period.
- Taxpayers gain $1.60 for every public dollar invested in Tribal Colleges.
- Society benefits $4.80 for every dollar via higher incomes, business growth, and cost savings.
Continued, reliable investment is expected to allow Tribal Colleges to maintain the facilities, equipment, programs, and partnerships needed to prepare students for high-demand careers and advance opportunity across the country.
