Bureau of Indian Affairs Launches $4.8M IGNITE Grant for Tribal Workforce Training and Technology Pathways

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Bureau of Indian Affairs announced a $4.8 million competitive grant initiative aimed at preparing Tribal members for careers in high-demand trades and emerging technology sectors.
The pilot program, known as Indigenous Growth in New & Innovative Trade Employment (IGNITE), will award between 18 and 22 grants ranging from $100,000 to $300,000. Administered under the BIA’s Job Placement and Training program, the initiative focuses on workforce models ready for immediate implementation rather than long-term planning or startup phases.
"The IGNITE grant pilot program supports implementation-ready Tribal workforce development programs designed to prepare participants for employment in high-demand industries," the BIA stated in its solicitation notice.
Eligible applicants include federally recognized tribes, tribal organizations acting on their behalf, and tribal consortia. Selected programs will receive funding for a 12-month period of performance starting in fall 2026.
Tribes applying for the grant can focus on infrastructure and construction trades, such as structural steel and utility work, or emerging technology pathways, including artificial intelligence, digital fabrication, drone systems, and advanced manufacturing. Applicants may also propose integrated models combining both tracks.
To qualify, programs must lead directly to job placement, apprenticeship entry, or industry-recognized credentials. Grant funds may be used for participant support services such as childcare, transportation assistance, stipends, and certification fees, as well as necessary training equipment. Standard construction costs and general administrative overhead are prohibited.
Applications will be evaluated on a 100-point scale, with the heaviest weight placed on immediate operational readiness and projected workforce outcomes.
Applications must be submitted via email to JPTignite@bia.gov or through the BIA Office of Indian Services website by Sept. 18. The BIA noted that submissions via Grants.gov will not be accepted.
